Wow- I've been twittering a lot more than blogging. 140 word limit is kind of fun:)

early morning ( and also testing publishing from iPhone)

early morning, originally uploaded by mdshivers.

Yes folks two posts in one day. During rendering times I have a few moments to post quick things, so I am testing out how easy it is to publish with Flickr/iPhone and my blog. Hope that this doesn't bore you too much!
Photo taken with 5dMKII and 50mm lens.

Usefulness of iPhone software 3.0

Just updated my iPhone software this morning. I was going to do it last night, but Apple's servers were seriously being tasked. There are already plenty of reviews out there , so I'm not going to go into detail. But I am very happy about the updated camera software, landscape keyboard in safari and cut and paste. To try all this out in a practicle way, I'm writing this entry on my iPhone. I've been using Twitter for a while now to do the same thing. It links to my website, but the data is on their side. By posting on this blog, I can write longer and it's contained on my site. So it's slot easier to write longer now and I can cut and paste some articles or links to here. Now I just have to figure out the best way to upload/post photos from here. Facebook, Twitter and Flickr make it so easy!

micro blogging can be easier

Well as you can see, I've been using Twitter more lately to update my website on what I've been up too. It's just so easy! I have it on my iPhone or computer. I probably use the iPhone the most- just because I can Tweet while I'm rendering or waiting at a red light or in an elevator. Blogging software is a little more laborious to say the least. But blogging does have it's purpose and it still has it's purpose on my website. Speaking of purpose and my website.... I've been trying to update it a little the past few days. It's really about to get overhauled- through what pages I have and what sections I have. The structure for me needs a little revamp, because I am not using certain sections like I use too. When I first made the "links" page in 2001, there was no software that let you bookmark your web browsing favorites and then have it sync to multiple computers. You either had to email the link, or export your entire bookmarks and then email that attachment to yourself. Well- I just started making links on my website that I went to a lot. I was traveling all over Europe and the States and this is was the best way. Now- I've got Mobile Me for Safari and Xmarks for Firefox. And when I don't have either, I go to iGoogle and save links there. So the link page the way I have it now will be disappearing.
Also going to just do a general clean up of other things as well. I've been so busy working on client stuff that I've failed to keep my site the way I want it. So here's a heads up. :)

Also you will notice that I finally have a real print store up and running. You can now order prints directly from my website and have them professionally printed and shipped right to your home. I plan to add a lot more of my prints on there, so keep a look out.

I'll write a separate post about the print store soon. But in the mean while, take care and thanks for stopping by.

tweet

i joined Twitter recently and giving it a shot. I'm going to use it as a communication tool to other people in the industry and to also have my Twitter feed on my front page of my website. When I have a quick thought about something, posting Twitter tweets on my iPhone is much easier than logging into my blog account and posting something that way. I think a lot of other people think the same and that is why twitter recently got another huge VC fund boost.

So I'll be keeping my thoughts rolling both here and on my front page (or twitter account).

This is the first year in a really long time that I am ready for winter to be over with. I usually love the cold and love all that comes with it, but with two small kids, I am ready for spring. Kids are like germ magnets! Well at least when I am older my immune system will be thankful for this time.

I saw a video the other day made by an Atlanta photographer named Zack Arias who was discontent and stuck in a rut with his photography. This video is extremely powerful and really struck a cord with me. It got 10,000 views in the first 12 hours, so I am thinking a lot of people are feeling this same struggle.

The new labri.org site is Live!!

With great joy, I would like to announce the complete new redesign of the labri.org website.

After going through 4 different models, and many pieces of paper, I created one that I think will help L'Abri Fellowship's online presence through functionality, usability, design and ease of use.
I have had to recreate every single page from code to graphic and have made a model that will be easily updated and easily refreshed. It's about 100 pages and it was a fair amount of work. But now using CSS and some other technologies, I'll be able to update to update the site with much more ease.

Please have a look and enjoy the new site!!

letting it live

I just wanted to give a quick post as it will be my last for 2008! Lots of things have happen over this year but over all it's been a good one.
I had some prints made yesterday of some photos that I worked on over the past two years and it was pretty rewarding. They have only lived on my computer and so it was nice to see them in print. As I was looking at the colors and textures in the analog format, it provided a warm and inviting experience.
Life is kinda like that too. Something lives in your head - an idea for a short film, a poem, a book or a photo. It lives in you for a while and you start to develop that idea. Then at some point it reaches it's fullest potential without you acting on it. And from there you either act on it, or let the idea die. It's not like you are telling it to die, but it's more of a slow process. Like decaying fruit, but there is no smell or sign of rotting. It just starts disappearing.
So at that moment you should really think if it's worth making it live. For me, yesterday was the moment that I needed to see some of my photographs printed. I needed to see it live outside of my computer and I needed a physical representation of it. So my idea hasn't died and I am seeing it through. Same with a video. I've got a lot of footage that I need to edit. It's just a little artsy piece to show off some HD footage and to show off some coloring ideas that I have been working on. But it's just sitting there and hasn't come to life. So hopefully this post will jump start that project :)
Well- I need to get back to friends and family and start kicking some some but on the Wii.
You guys have a Happy New Year!!

back seat

I've actually been taking a back seat lately and have been discovering and reading some new interesting blogs instead of writing on this one. I've also been quite busy in my personal life, which has been a beautiful thing. As I have read and been told, take time for your family. In the end that is all what matters.
So what has been cooking? I've got several video projects out the door, a few photography assignments and I am working on a complete redesign of the L'Abri Fellowship International website. I have actually really enjoyed going back in forth between disciplines lately and it has stretch my creativeness. Once I start a project, I really dive into it, immersing myself in the language, current trends, etc. And yes those two things change constantly.

One video that I just completed was for Emory University, School of Medicine's Cardiology department. I made this video for the annual TCT Interventional Conference. The symposium features live procedures originating from more than 25 leading US and international medical centers featuring world-renowned operators performing complex interventions. Emory University, located in Atlanta Georgia, was chosen to do several live cases this year and this opening will be played before each live case starts to show what the city, staff and surroundings are like. Attendance is around 30,000 doctors and industry professionals.

So check out the video and I'll be writing soon on my thoughts of video portfolio's and presenting your video projects on the web.

Wired.

I love Wired Magazine. I have had a subscription for about two years. But for the past six months I just can't keep caught up. They are thick and full of info. But you really have to take the time and read them.
My goal in the next month is to get caught up. We'll see.

Step 1 is to skip the ad's. I did that with two of them and I just plowed through.

Step 2 is to read the long article's in the back first. Because at first your attention span is full on and you can handle it. The short stuff in the front is all about short attention span.

Step 3 is to bring them with you everywhere. After a full day's work and then handle all the stuff once you get home, it's never going to happen.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Week One with the iPhone

How it can change your day to day life.

1. Driving to work- listening to the radio and they are talking about how Miss America fell down the night before and how embarrassing it must have been. I proceed to pull out the iPhone and watch the clip on Youtube (while at a red light of course).

2. Going to a new store in a different part of down
Where is that turn again?
Google maps with GPS on iPhone... thanks.

3. At Home Depot
Shopping for a new Weed Eater. Straight shaft or Curve? What the heck?!
Google it on the iPhone and find some dude in Texas that knows a lot more about that than I do. (I bought a Straight Shaft)

4. Wife is late for a party and needs directions quick and of course our printer doesn't work.
Google maps with directions

5. My neighbor SMS's me to get together.
It use to take me 10 hours to write one sentence. I hated that. Now it's fun to get them. Looks just like iChat.

6. Bored waiting in traffic
Games
I have had time to play games of late.
Now since the iPhone is usually with me everywhere, so are the games.

engage

I've been on the ground running the past few months, traveling, editing, shooting, traveling and you kind of just wake up every day seeing what the next thing will be. It may be new words coming out of a loved one's month, a new piece of computer gear that may be released or something that just goes missing. I've been reading blogs on the net for a long time- some I follow every day, some I follow every other week. It's amazing how this information machine keeps going and going- new things everyday, or something being hashed out over and over.
I'm currently at the phase of being here but not here, listening but not listening, seeing but not seeing, doing but not doing. I kind of like it. It's relaxing, yet I still am getting a lot of things done, but time is just moving faster and faster- which can be a little scary.
So i've got a huge backlog of things that i've been reading, listening, watching and studying. And why keep it all to one self?
Another thing that I've been thinking about is enagement. Not marriage, but people to people. People should engage their neighbors. People should engage their old college classmates. People should engaged their preachers. We all need that extra little kick in creativity, and friendship never hurts.
So it's sometimes funny to think about that one can get a lot of "engagement" through some random blog that you found one night while doing some crazy surfing, and luckily, oh luckily thought to create a bookmark.
While the blogs are a valuable resource, a little good ol fashion get together never hurts.

the windy city

the windy city, originally uploaded by mdshivers.

I can see this from my hotel. My first impressions of Chicago are amazing. What a wonderful city. It's big and busy but not as much as New York. It's still pretty cold though and it's the end of March. But pretty busy up here, not much internet time :)

October 23, 2007

Over half a million views- thanks everyone!

I joined YouTube last year and posted a video for a contest that "The Fray" were holding. Since then I've been featured on the Fray's website and on youtube. It's now at 531,708 views. Needless to say, thanks for everyone viewing the video and sharing it over the internet. Though the video was originally made for a Radiohead song in 2002 (which is available to view on my website) this new version has taken a life of it's own.
So if you haven't seen it, go to Youtube to check it out. And again, thanks for stopping by and checking out my work.
P.S. Yes life has been really busy lately, but I plan to start back up with some new short films soon. Stay tuned.

seeing new life

A few weeks ago I was asked by a client to create a documentary about Heart Transplant patients. It is going to be a video about what goes through their minds and really focus on the emotional aspect of getting a transplant. It sounded exciting and I was happy to do it. The next day I was asked to visit a patient who was waiting on a Heart Transplant. I have met several people in my life that have had transplants, but never like this. So I brought my gear in and set up - introduced myself and talked with the family. It was a tough time because the person had been waiting a while for a transplant and they were not sure when a heart would become available. The interviewer asked the person questions about what they were going through, what they were feeling and what they would like to do after the transplant. As I stood there staring through the view finder, I began to really look at life in a very different way. The things this person wanted so badly, I took for granted. Taking walks with my wife, playing with my daughter- all the freedoms that I forget everyday. The interview lasted about 30 minutes and as I packed my gear, the person's preacher came in to see him. It brightened everyone up having him in the room.

Several weeks went by and I wasn't really sure what was going on with the patient. The client wanted to have interviews before and after the operation and I was just hoping that I was going to get a call to come back and film. I think since that moment that I had met the patient, I just started thinking about my own life more and my own health. Just this past week I got a message saying that the person got the transplant and that they were doing really good. I was so excited for this person!! It just brought joy to my heart to know that the patient was doing good.

I went back and filmed the person yesterday and they looked so much better. I told the family that I had been thinking of them and glad that everything is ok. I set the camera up again, this time more excited and more encouraged about the situation. As the person began to talk about the experience, the wait, the family's experience, you could see life at it's grandest right in front of me. This person was fighting to live. They wanted to live. The interview lasted about 40 minutes and it was a very emotional time. The person talked about the importance of being a donor. How even if you say you want to be a donor make sure your family knows. Everyone in the family needs to be in agreement to donate. They talked about wanting to live and being so grateful to the doctors and staff. The person just really shared their thoughts and it was a great thing to for me to hear.

I hope that this documentary will help people understand heart transplant patients and what goes all into the process. I am not sure of the distribution, but I think even with this one interview, it could be really influential to people and their families who need transplants. It was for me!

still farming, originally uploaded by mdshivers.

I was able to take a quick trip out to the country and see the ol' kicking group. I have quickly forgotten how pretty the country side of Georgia can be. I'm going to make a trip back soon, and spend all day taking photos. Its great to get away from the city hustle.

As on flickr, I've gotten a little frustrated with it lately. I feel that I am limiting what I am posting because I am trying to think about what everyone would like to see. And that just isn't fun. So I am going back to what I want to post. so the next few photos are some fam shots that i took a few weeks ago.

I've been hit pretty hard with spammers on my blog lately. I've tried to keep the comments open, and people can comment etc. I'm getting 50 a day from this spam junk, so I've changed some settings around, and so now it will ask for a vaild email address. I won't use it or whatever spammers do, I'm just tried of deleting all of the spam.

a colorful chalet

a colorful chalet, originally uploaded by mdshivers.

This is one my favortie chalets in the village of Huemoz, Switzerland. Its not perfect by any means and by the look of it one wonders if anyone lives there. There are huge cracks growing up the walls of the house and the paint is a little old and flakey. But it doesn't matter. It's probably been there longer than the U.S. has been the U.S. and will probably last for long time to come.

The house just symbolizes a lot of the values you learn when you live in Europe or when you stay there for a period of time. People just don't tear things down to build something new. They work with the old, they fix the old, they keep the old.

Something that we should take to the heart. We're a bit busy at always trying to find the new thing in life, the new fix, the new building.

wew!!!!

My mind is starting to think in the blog format... kinda the way I post photos on flickr. Just got to find a computer when i have those thoughts.

lots of video work has been done and put to rest. excited, tired and glad that it is over. In the process of that several week fiasco, i got some reading glass. you can check my flickr blog on that.

So I've entered into the four eyed world when i am in front of the computer. Kinda weird- and still getting use to it.

As far as the video projects, I worked with the Atlanta News FOX 5 on a medical piece dealing with injecting stem cells into the heart with the outcome of revitalizing the dead cells from a heart attack. Pretty cool stuff- i shot some footage of the operation and other B-Roll stuff and they used it in their news piece.

Then I collaborated with the ACC (American College of Cardiology) and filmed some intro's and did some audio recording for a breaking news piece about Pfizer and their wonder drug torcetrapib, Pfizer's experimental pill to raise good cholesterol, touted as one of the most important medicines in a generation. Well it got yanked out of research and is going no where.
Go to http://www.cardiosource.com/ and click on the Dec. 5th video. I also shot the Dec. 8th video too.

After all that I shot some footage for a news story about the stem cell heart research video for a company (gosh totally forgot the name at the moment) that creates health news stories and then sells them to news affiliates across the country. I was helping out another videographer and the News company and asked him to get the footage from me. Do I get the short end of the stick? Probably. Do I get credit for it? Probably not. Do I care? ehh.... i guess that is how it goes in the industry. If they want more footage they'll come directly to me and I make more contacts.

Also in the midst of all the video stuff.. I am trying to revamp a few websites and trying to get a new one up for a local Swiss author. Its fun... but busy!!

anyway i'm here :)

Smoke on the Water

Smoke on the Water, originally uploaded by mdshivers.

Its amazing that our trip to switzerland was 2 1/2 months ago. So much has happen since then- it feels like eternity. I miss the place deeply... i sometimes wish that I could do freelance full time and bring our family to all these exotic places and fellowship with wonderful people. I sometimes get that empty feeling when i am walking around my city. some areas here just don't care about community, beauty, excersiing, the outdoors, etc. you just get in your car - and blast the ac and music. i am still going through all my photos of my trip to europe during my free time. (which is none right now).
but i don't think is healthy to have the "grass is greener on the other side" mentality too. i can make a difference in my little world.

Going back to the country.., originally uploaded by mdshivers.

One of my good friends since Junior High School got married this past weekend. I was a groomsman along with 2 other guys who i have known as long. It was a great weekend and nice to get away from the hustle of the city. The wedding was in Crawfordville, Georgia. Most likely you haven't heard of it.. a really realy small town- steps you back in into the 1800's when you go. this church was built in the late 1800's, replacing other church that had been there a hundred years earlier. In 2002, the church had their 200 year aniversary. Amazing history. Recently "Sweet Home Alabama" was filmed here. Next door to this church are graveyards and the home of the vice president of the confederacy.

where do you start? wish i blogged more.. but at least I do eh? Today was a fun day in tech land because Flickr got a massive update and so now i am enjoying the benifits of that. Also today- Apple announced their new I-Book replacements- the new Macbooks. And they are freaking awsome. Good price and they can dual boot. sweet. yes that wil probably be my next laptop in a couple of years. when they have made everything univeral. Bought time eh? can't wait.

Summer plans are in the making lookks like.... no where for now! yep sitting tight hanging out and waiting for new things to happen. bought some new photography books the other day-- very cool indeed. and then i realized i am in dire need to update my photos on my site. bit dated. just takes so much work.

Still Here in the New Year

A morning stroll in the Swiss Alps.

Well we are in the new year and i'm still here. Plan on keeping blogging, just been a bit crazy lately. Had a great New Years in Atlanta. Getting together with friends who I haven't seen in a while was a lot of fun.
Flew up to New Haven this past weekend and drove back down with a "new" used car. That was lot of fun and a really long road trip. 18 hours. wow. by the end i was getting a little bit tired of the "road trip experience".
I've found a slew of friends blogs out there lately. Some are from people who i haven't seen in years. You find their site and bame- you like catch up with there life as you read. Thats fun. So i guess someone could be doing the same with me and this blog. feel free to drop me an email/comment even if i haven't talked to you in forver.

So lets see other techy news. Apple is starting to switch to Intel. Wow. I am excited but content right now with my PowerMac G5. I would like to get a laptop- but not sure what would be the most productive for me right now. Since i mostly use adobe products and macromedia (well adobe products) those haven't been updated to universal binaries yet. meaning one software for both current powerpc and just released intel.
so i don't know. if i was a first mac buyer i would go out and buy the new imac core duo or the new macbook pro. But if i were me or another proffesional using pro apps everyday and needed a laptop or a smoking machine (powermac) i would probably get the powerpc version ie powerbook/ibook/powermac. I mean there going to be good for another two years and buy then all software (microsoft/adobe/everything else) will have a working intel/universal binaires going on. ehh so anyway i want a laptop for my mobile projects. but who am i kidding. can't buy one right now anyway. saving up for other toys and necessites. so maybe apple will come out with some nice refurbs. love those.
so hopefully the transition will be smooth. they are really going a lot faster than expected.
drove around decatur today. it was nice. seeing things and checking out things i don't normally do. found a cool coffee shop too.

I also plan to update my blogging software soon. Going to try out some new things. I am thinking about wordpress. not sure though.
and flickr--- what a great website. never would i have thought a site can bring community together. just check out the atlanta one. you'll see.
thats all for now...

Thanksmas

It seems that when we were younger- Thanksgiving and Christmas were ages apart. Took forever to get to christmas. Now its basically the same holiday! I still am amazed how time can fly by so quickly. You can't sneeze cause you'll miss it.
So yep another year coming to an end. There are lots of cool toys out there too. The video I-Pod. Geezz this thing is awsome. An i haven't even owned my 40gig I-Pod photo for even a year!! Got it last march- and its already outta date. but hey thats technology for ya. Don't hate Apple for it either. They gotta come out with new stuff. Speaking of "Creative" came out with a copy cat version- looks almost just like it. you'd think they would try a different tatic than that.
And in a month apple will be having their Mac World conference in San Fran. I really wonder what they will have up there sleaves then. Intel? who knows.

One of my favorite places to eat is Ru-Sans. Its a sushi place here in atlanta. Love it. crave it. man its good and a great deal. i can eat and get filled up there for the same price as i could at any fast food resturant. Now why would i would to eat a burger and fries while i could eat sushi. The mercury fix is way better than having greasy fingers.

well this picture i am posting is from Rothenburg, Germany. I took it in 2003 when I was working on this TV show for Diane Bish called "Joy of Music". The show and the experience was a lot of fun!!! I am really glad that i got to work with her. We traveled all through Austria and Germany for a Christmas Tour.
I plan to post more pictures just gotta grab some extra time.

Here are a couple l links to keep you in the Christmas spirt

Ready for a Turkey Break

Its turkey time folks. An that means 4 day weekend. Glad its coming. Been a bit busy lately. Not much with side projects or overload work- but just running around seeing folks and doing things. Went camping/hiking in North Georgia 2 weekends ago. Had a blast. It wasn't too cold yet and it was perfect weather. Found a great campsite, nice stream, and crisp air. Did ten miles- coming back was a bit tiresome. This past week again was really busy getting stuff done around the house, doing life as they say. Went and saw some old friends and the to the UGA football game. Ist game i've been to in 3 years. Wow. Its been a while. Great game- took the camera and enjoyed it a lot.
Lately have been into taking photos a lot more. I've always done it- since i was a kid. Click click click. Then in highschool found the videocamera. film film film. Actually that was my major in college. So i did it. Loved it. Still love it obviously. But now it seems like the photo camera has popped up again. Why? could it be that video production takes so much time for just one person? I mean think about it. You come up with an idea. You write it. You find a place to shoot. You find a person or thing to shoot. You set the shoot. You do 10 takes of the same thing. x 15 scenes or what ever. You capture footage to computer. You go and go through computer to figure out the best way to edit. You find/create music for project. You put it together. You re-film. You re-edit, you are running out of space on harddrive. You stress (not as much cause I have a PowerMac. :-) _ you edit - you clean audio. You finalize. You compress to DVD. You create DVD. You Test DVD. You watch. ..... You give. they watch. Your happy. They like.
Now don't get me wrong. I like this process. Wouldn't have done it for so long. But with video - I love doing all of it. Everry part. Its all a great joy to me.
Now i am think a photograph. Humm. A lot of it is the same. It just goes a lot quicker. One image instead of 29 per second. Humm. So its just been very appealing to me lately. I have a good canon camera now- plan on getting a better canon in the coming months. Just waiting to see if anything happens in the market.
But its fun. It seems a little more random and a little more freeing. Unless you are filming a documentary-. So these are my thoughts for now. I won't give up the video. Got all the gear- just missing some time if you know what i mean.
so here a couple images from my two weekends - hope you enjoy.

exploring

This week was a bit hectic- lots of going on. Had a live video program that was shown in washington DC. it was a lot of fun but a bit hectic during the setup. lots of side projects are done now- and thankful. Glad to have a break for a moment. All of the clients were very pleased and that is very relieving. Download some great stuff from I-tunes. The new "death cab for cutie" is really great.
Today has been a lazy day - didn't have any coffee. Still trying to figure out my voice here on this blog. its an odd concept. This site is meant for a lot of stuff. A showcase for my freelance production work, some of my latest photos and videos, my thoughts.
I like the idea of the blog- i know some people read this but not exactly sure who. I also like the idea of mixing blogs with photos- photos really do say a thousand words.
Lately i have really enjoyed just randomly surfing the net. Starting at point a (a good start is Flickr's Explore) and then go from there. Check people's sites, check their links and in a second you have found something brand new to you- but has been around for several years. Thats awsome. I like that type of information- you have to work to get it. TV- you just sit and flip. There is no exploring. But i enjoying watching certain programs- i love finding out new information. You just have to explore a TV guide for that.
But with internet comes distraction- you sat down in front of the computer to do this- and you ended up reading an article on how Kate Moss should stop being a model cause she uses drugs. What?! i don't know.
well happy surfing.

Things are going god- just keeping busy. Seeing old friends and new family the past few weekends. Have been doing a lot of reading on capturing 480p footage with a 16x9 aspect ratio in a 24p timeline. FCP pro does a great job doing it and the footage looks great! i will post some of my test footage.

anyway- keeping it real around here. lots of cool projects that i am working on.

Gotta big ol truck

Laurie and I have been traveling this past weekend to see family in florida. We were able to get some sofas from my brother and see lots of family. We rented a nice pickup truck for that occasion- and man it was great. I want a truck now.
